Cinque Terre, Italy

Cinque Terre: An Italian Romance Story.

Cinque Terre is a set of 5 small remote seaside villages along the Mediterranean coast of Northern Italy: Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manalola, and Riomaggiore. So remote and true to their fishing roots, there are no roads in or out of the villages and the only way to travel between them is to hike or take the train! While each village is unique in its own way, there is a common theme throughout: colourful houses line the steep cliffside hills, surrounded by vineyards and backyard gardens. Churches and buildings in the most unlikely of places. And beaches lined with umbrellas. It is truly a sight to see.

When I visited Cinque Terre, it was my first time stepping foot in Italy and it was probably the best introduction to the country I could expect. Everyone is friendly and inviting, the food is fresh and homemade, as well as locally grown, and everywhere you turn is the most beautiful picturesque sights to see. The cobblestone roadways are lined with old buildings and hanging gardens, churches on every other corner, and tiny restaurants galore.

While you could probably visit all five villages in half a day, I recommend taking a full day to soak up the unique atmosphere and vibes of Cinque Terre. Take some time to lay on the beach, roam the cobblestone streets, eat at a local restaurant, browse the endless churches and cliffside terraces or hike from one village to the next along the Sentiero Azzurro. The section of the path between Riomaggiore to Manarola is known as Via dell’Amore, or “Love Walk” and winds along the edge of the cliffs overlooking the sea.

Cinque Terre is definitely a place that holds a special place in my heart, a place that made me and many others, fall in love with Italy. And when you go, you will too.
